🐷 Happy Lunar New Year 🐷
Happy Lunar New Year
Welcome to my inaugural newsletter!I'll write on the first of each month on the lunar calendar.
It's the year of the pig. I'm only just starting to feel ready to take on the new year after the craze of the holiday season. Lucky for me, many are celebrating new year's day today. As you may know, I released my debut album
in December. Sharing those songs with a broader audience will be my main priority for this year. I look forward to playing out, especially since I've already purchased a number of jumpsuits for my gayageum performances. Shoes too.
The album was covered by
and has gotten spins on Radio Korea — all thanks to my mom who has been tirelessly pitching my album and selling CDs to her customers of twenty-some years. I'm trying to pull my weight too and planning next steps. There's not necessarily a set path or formula I can follow and being an artist (and human) has been a rather chaotic existence for me but I'm thankful that I get to do what I do. Thanks for joining me as I figure stuff out!
Best Music Video
My music video to the album title track "Dream of Home" was awarded best music video for 2018 at the Asians on Film Festival in Los Angeles last month (thanks to my director/DP Jon Pears and the crew!). It's currently slated to screen at a couple other film festivals in Oregon and Texas and you should see an online release in the spring. Watch the trailer.
Eugene in March
To be more precise, the music video will be screening in Eugene on Saturday, March 16th at the University of Oregon. I'll be playing a couple house concerts that weekend so if anyone in Eugene wants to attend, send me an email.
Singing Tip
Here, I leave you with a singing tip because I made this gif. Perhaps the beginning of a series ...As a singer, the instrument is the body so posture has significant impact on the production of sound. It's important to stand tall like a string is pulling you up from the top of your head. Your knees should not be locked nor your shoulders rounded forward. You should feel sturdy in the sense that you're grounded with feet firmly planted but feel more like a tube man than an iron statue.
See you next month ~
