An Update on My Hair 🚨

An Update on My Hair

It's 2023.05.01 on the lunar calendar today.

Hair update ðŸš¨ Usually I only send these to my friend Molly but I decided this time that it was newsletter-worthy to share with all of you. I wanted to strive for Soleil Moon Frye's 90s look while I have long locks but if anything, I've been feeling like Cousin Itt so I'm looking forward to chopping it off in short order. The cut is for a 50s look for the music video I'm shooting with my director Jon in a couple weeks when my hairstylist is out of town.

If anyone has leads on an LA hairstylist who is experienced working with Asian hair, I'm all ears. With my two heads worth of hair, I have awed many a hairstylist, and wrangling it calls for a seasoned pro with specific experience. Everything else is in order for the shoot from Ross' vintage mic and Keith's stargazing pal's venue to the seamed pantyhose and bullet bra but the crucial element of hair (and makeup) is still up in the air.

Wednesday 6/21 at 5:00 PM Pacific Time

Thanks to the Alliance for California Traditional Arts (ACTA), I've been able to take gayageum lessons, practicing the sanjo repertoire for the past academic year. I'll be on YouTube this Wednesday at 5pm PT to talk a bit about the music and share some of what I've been practicing and learning from my teacher. If you're free for 20–25 minutes then, please

my practicing/performance video and take an audience survey for ACTA. (The video and survey will be up the rest of the week if you want to take part asynchronously). See you in the YouTube chat box!

Anyone have tips on how to stop being a slacker? I need to start writing my album book already! By the next time I write to you, I *will* have started setting aside 90–120 minutes daily to focus on writing.

Below's a gif of something I did manage to work on for the Jungian project: Jello, Liza, and I rehearsing for a dance workout video we'll shoot for Dre's remix of an album song. Music and movement are good for the soul <3

For the workout video, I thought I wanted a long sideways ponytail at first but having binged—in the name of research—both seasons of "Physical" (about a housewife becoming an aerobics star in 1980s San Diego) and researching more references, I now have a better idea of the 80s fitness look. It's more muted than the flashy neon of Halloween costumes and the ballet influence is apparent when you look at women in early 80s aerobics classes. Women working out was a novel concept and there wasn't yet a plethora of options for separate aerobics clothes, from what I gather. I'm considering an 80s perm for this video (what you might see on Jane Fonda's VHS tapes). That'd be fun but I'd have that hairstyle for a few months until the perm wears off ... why not, I guess? It's going to be a summer of distinct hairstyles through the decades.

Happy holiday weekend ~
