Spin That Void

Spin That Void

It’s 2024.02.01 on the lunar calendar today.

Hello from the capital! Losing an hour to daylight saving time may hit hard today with an additional jump ahead three hours, coming from the West Coast. But I get to spend time with my college friend Molly in DC and yesterday, we saw a one-woman play by Madeline Sayet about being a Mohegan scholar of Shakespeare, which was quite moving. In the week ahead, I’m looking forward to doing some museum work out of the National Gallery.

Do you find yourself slogging through the work day or wondering what the point of it all is? If so, I recommend taking a few minutes to move along to an aerobic workout I made with director Jon as a pick-me-up to shake off existential dread. Pop in a(n imaginary) VHS into the YouTube VCR and spin that void with us!

Joyce & Jelly's 80s Workout: Aerobics to Spin That Void

I asked Dre for the “Spin” remix to get people pumped as they engage with the concept of spinning things into meaning—to provide a release from the perennial activity of staring into the void. See if you can catch all the spinning motifs Dre put in.spin = circle = mandala

“The contemplation of a mandala is meant to bring an inner peace, a feeling that life has again found its meaning and order.”

–From Carl Jung’s “Man and His Symbols”

Thinking “Spin” might be an appropriate track for spin classes, I scoped one out last week. Working on this remix workout has gotten me to try new things that I’d never even considered from dancing to participating in a cycling class. I was feeling like a cultural anthropologist, curiously observing the yelling and bits of choreography that go on in a spin class, but then I realized that’s just the human experience. Being an outsider, poking your head in, and finding your people in some of those places.

Angelatinous Kwon (Jello, Jelly, and Gelatin are all acceptable nicknames) was tasked with choreographing the workout dance. She demurred for a while but I swayed her with my big sister powers. Check out her solo—she’s a total star! And my sweet friend Liza rounded out our trio of dancers. We are going to go to a dance class later this month to celebrate the release. I have discovered through “Spin” that I do enjoy dancing—mainly the jumping around, I think. Movement is good for the soul.

By the way, there’s a behind-the-scenes video too of rehearsals for the workout.

Spin Dance Workout (Behind The Scenes)

What is this a remix of, you ask? It’s a remix of my song “Spin,” which was released in the future on July 26th 2024.

The next release on Friday, April 5th will be totally different—a quiet duo song with Ross on piano and me singing and playing gayageum. Keeping you on your toes 🩰
